Session on: Latest Biofuels

Lignocellulosic biomass is derived from processing different types of biomass and is termed second-generation biofuels. Using conventional methods, Biofuels from vegetable oils and sugarcane can be derived and are termed the first generation of biofuels. Comparing the above Lignocellulosic biomass consisting of woody crops, waste from agriculture make it difficult to extract biofuels. Technological advancements in biofuels have been developed due to the limitations of first-generation biofuels. There is a limit to the quantity of biofuel production above which will affect food supplies and environmental biodiversity.

Session on: New process of Refining Biofuels

The efficient extraction of marketable by-products from biomass is Biorefining. This means the production of relatively high-value chemicals for the pharmaceutical, polymer, and chemical industries will reduce production costs of primary energy products, especially when integrating the biorefining process into the already existing production process of other industries. The establishment of biorefineries is a way forward toward creating a new market for bio-based products. The value chain derived from the raw biomass feedstock increases when the biorefineries produce multiple by-products.

Market Analysis

With the drive to secure, an eco-friendly and sustainable fuel source the demand for biofuels is said to grow. With an increase in policy framed to allow biofuel blending with automotive fuels and the government's support for clean energy, the global biofuel market is set to expand in the future.

The automotive sector has the highest share of demand for Biofuels namely (biodiesel and ethanol blending). Policy mandates drive the demand for bioenergy in the transportation sector in any economy for the use of clean fuels.

The prices of ethanol and biodiesel were on a decreasing trend in 2015 due to low biofuel raw materials and crude oil prices. Despite this, with the revival of biofuel feedstock and crude oil prices, the global prices of ethanol and biodiesel are anticipated to recover in the future.

With their policy frame for biofuel blending, Brazil, China, and the United States are expected to be the leading growth markets. With the commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and increasing energy security, China is considered a potential market for Biofuels.

Policies set by various countries to Grow the Market:

The growth of the biofuel market has been tremendous over the last decade due to policy frameworks, like the Fuel Quality Directive of the EU region and the Renewable Energy Directive which stipulates 7% of renewable energy should come from feed crops and the transportation industry by 2020. Further, the blending of biofuels with fossil fuels, due to these policies set by such countries has increased the demand for biofuels in other regions of the world.

To the policies of Brazil, the US, and China, there must be a 15-27% blend of biofuels with fossil fuels by the year 2020-22. This framework is what will drive the global demand in the respective regions. To compete with petroleum fuels and achieve their ambitious targets countries such as Italy, Germany, France, and the US have adopted a fuel excise reduction to help Biofuels. To promote the usage of Biofuels, Low carbon footprint, and related policies have been adopted.

Prospective Growth in the future: Asia Pacific Region

Though there is sluggish growth in the production of biofuels namely ethanol in the Asia-Pacific region, there are stringent biofuel blending policies in other countries. The flow of investment into the production of biofuels across nations in the Asia Pacific region will see a surge due to this.

Significant developments in the Market:

            1. United States:2017, November- A company named Abengoa secured a contract to design, construct and commission a plant to convert municipal waste to bioenergy. Located in Nevada this plant produces 10 million gallons of biofuels per year to be utilized in the aviation industry

2.India:2017, June -Under the brand name Indizel, My eco Energy sells biodiesel in cans of 5,10,20 liters across India by retailing. Produced waste vegetable oil is converted as a Biofuel that is superior to petroleum products by way of emissions, price, and mileage.

 Difficulties of the Biofuel market:

Biofuels have a lower calorific value compared to contemporary resources. Refining biofuels for higher energy efficiency is a costly process. To increase mandatory production quantity towards biofuels, large investments are required. Even though this may be, Biofuels are a sustainable natural resource. To ride over the disadvantages of biofuels and allow consumers to use a possibility, investments are required in Research and development. Utilization of technology will decrease the challenges faced and create market potential
